3030 Aluminum Extrusion
3030 aluminum extrusion is a 30 × 30 mm (1.18 × 1.18 in) T-slot profile with a slot on each face. It’s light enough for shelves, rolling carts and 3D printer enclosures, and still stiff enough to stay square. Every Slot & Shaft 3030 design comes with a parts list generated from the same 3D model, so the slot width, nuts and bolts on the list all match.
3030 specs at a glance
Slot & Shaft 3030 designs use the European-style “6 series” profile with an 8 mm slot. Every value in this table is MISUMI’s published figure for its HFS6-3030 profile, not our own measurement.
| Spec | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-section | 30 × 30 mm (1.18 × 1.18 in), 4 slotted faces | MISUMI HFS6-3030 |
| Slot width | 8 mm ±0.36 mm (0.31 in) | MISUMI HFS6-3030 |
| Bolt size | M6 | MISUMI HFS6-3030 |
| Weight per meter | 0.9 kg/m (0.60 lb/ft) | MISUMI HFS6-3030 |
| Cross-sectional area | 333 mm² (0.52 in²) | MISUMI HFS6-3030 |
| Moment of inertia (Ix = Iy) | 2.83 × 10⁴ mm⁴ (0.068 in⁴) | MISUMI HFS6-3030 |

Check the slot width, not just “3030”. The size name only describes the outside. Hardware has to match the slot: nuts for an 8 mm slot won’t fit a 6 mm or 10 mm one. Every line on our parts lists names the slot width.

Fittings that work with 3030
Every 3030 design uses 8 mm slot (M6) hardware:
- T-slot nuts & bolts: spring nuts that hold their place in the slot, plus M6 bolts.
- L brackets: quick 90° joints.
- Connectors: hidden joints and corner cubes for a cleaner look.

3030 or 4040?
Pick 3030 when weight and footprint matter: it weighs about half as much per meter as 4040 (0.9 vs 1.73 kg/m for the reference profiles). Pick 4040 for long spans and frames that carry people or heavy equipment. Its moment of inertia is roughly 3.7× higher, so it bends less (MISUMI HFS6-3030, HFS8-4040).
FAQ
What does “3030” mean?
The outside cross-section in millimeters: 30 mm × 30 mm.
What size bolts fit 3030 aluminum extrusion?
The 8 mm slot version we use takes M6 bolts, with nuts from M3 to M6 for lighter attachments (MISUMI).
How much does 3030 aluminum extrusion weigh?
The reference profile weighs 0.9 kg per meter (about 0.60 lb per foot) (MISUMI HFS6-3030).
Is 3030 strong enough for a desk?
For a small desk, it can be. For wide or tall desks, 4040 legs are the safer choice. Load depends on span and joints. We don’t publish load numbers for our designs.
Can I mix 3030 and 4040 in one frame?
It’s possible, but every joint then needs hardware that matches the slot of each profile it’s bolted into. Our current templates use one profile size per frame.
Can I buy 3030 cut to length from you?
Not yet. Each parts list links to US sellers who cut to length. Want a single pre-cut kit from us? Join the waitlist on any project page.
